Learning to ask for help

Leoni and Tami were two little sisters who shared a big problem: they never wanted to ask each other for help, even when they really needed it.

If Leoni got stuck on her 500-piece jigsaw puzzle of a beautiful farm with animals, she wouldn't ask Tami for assistance. Similarly, if Tami struggled with her math problems of addition or subtraction, she wouldn't ask Leoni for help. This pattern continued with everything they did.

One day, their mother decided to teach them an important lesson about the benefit of working together.

"Girls, come sit with me," she said, patting the couch beside her.

She pointed to a heavy box of books they were about to donate. "Can either of you help me carry this box to the car?" she asked.

Leoni and Tami looked at the box and exclaimed together, "Mummy, that box is too heavy!"

"You are absolutely right," their mother replied. "Even I couldn't carry it by myself. But I'm not going to try to do it alone. Instead, I'll ask for help."

She called out to their father, "Daddy, can you please help me carry this box of books to the car?"

Their father happily obliged, lifting the heavy box with ease.

Their mother turned to Leoni and Tami and said, "You need to learn that it's okay to ask for help when you need it. Asking for help doesn't mean you've failed. Actually, it means you are brave enough to ask for assistance."

She smiled and continued, "There is no benefit in failing simply because you refused to ask for help. Imagine if I had tried to carry that box alone and hurt my back? Would that be a good thing?"

Leoni and Tami looked at each other and replied together, "No, Mummy!"

"That's right," their mother said. "This is why I want you to learn to ask each other for help when you need to. When you work together, you can achieve much more and have fun along the way."

For the first time, the two sisters realized the value of asking for help and working together. From that day forward, they worked together on their puzzles, math problems, and other activities. They discovered that working together made tasks more enjoyable and easier to complete.

This is a wonderful story. Encouraging children to ask for help as it is a character of strength and not weakness.
