There was a funny smell coming from the cupboard that morning.

“Mummy, something smells funny in here!” Elizabeth told her mother as she swung open the doors. She had gone to the cupboard to get a spoon.

“Is it a bad smell?” Mummy asked.

“Oh, a terrible one!” Elizabeth said while pinching her nose to avoid the smell.

Mummy came to the cupboard to investigate and agreed that there was a terrible smell. Together, they searched for the source. They discovered some bad eggs in the egg tray were causing the smell.

“It is coming from the egg tray,” Mummy said. “And I think these are the two eggs that have gone bad and are causing that smell.”

She held up the two eggs to show Elizabeth. As Elizabeth leaned closer to smell, the bad smell hit her nose, and she quickly turned away.

“Smelly!” Elizabeth shouted.

Mummy took the bad eggs to the rubbish bin, and the bad smell disappeared from the cupboard.

“Oh Mummy, I am really glad that Mr. Garbage Man is going to come and take this rubbish away,” Elizabeth said. This is how Mummy had taught her to call him.

“That’s true Liz,” Mummy said, as she often called her. “Can you imagine how smelly the rubbish bin can be, and yet Mr. Garbage Man still carries it away to help us keep our home clean?”

Elizabeth pondered her mother’s words. She had never thought about it that way before.

“Oh my, they really do something so important!” Elizabeth said.

“Hmmm…. I have an idea,” Mummy said. “How about you write a letter to Mr. Garbage Man to say thank you? We can give it to him together when they come to collect the rubbish this week.”

“Wow!” Elizabeth said. “I would love that!”

After breakfast, she got some paper and her crayons, and together with Mummy, she wrote this letter:

Dear Mr. Garbage Man,

Thank you so much for helping us to take the rubbish away from our home. The rubbish can be very smelly. But you are brave. You carry it, put it on your truck, and drive it away, and our home remains nice and clean. Thank you so much. You are very brave.

Bye.

From Elizabeth.

The End.

This story is dedicated to all the amazing people who help us keep our homes clean by taking away the rubbish. Thank you.
