One Sunday afternoon, a father played a game of hide-and-seek with his three little girls: Mala, Anza, and Gemma. The girls had asked their father to count to 100 while they hid, so he was the only one seeking.
The entire house was filled with laughter while Mummy was in the kitchen, preparing a wonderful dinner of matooke and groundnut sauce for the family.
During a water break, Gemma, the youngest girl, asked her mother, “Mummy, can you come and play with us too?”
“I would love to, honey,” Mummy replied, “but right now I am finishing up with preparing dinner.”
“Okay, Mummy,” Gemma replied before running back to join her sisters.
“Oh, Daddy,” Anza, the middle one, said, “We love you very much because we can always play with you!”
Hearing this, Daddy realized Anza was saying it because she had overheard Mummy's response to Gemma.
“Thank you, Anza,” he replied. “But even though Mummy may not play with you as much as I do, she also loves you all very much and she does a lot to make us all happy!”
The following Sunday was Mother’s Day, a day for celebrating mothers all around the world for their love and care. Daddy had an amazing idea.
“So, next Sunday is Mother’s Day,” he said. “I want us all to do something special for Mummy.”
“What’s that?” Mala, the eldest daughter, asked.
“You are all going to write something that Mummy has taught you and read it to her on Mother’s Day,” he said.
All the girls got up smiling, excited to take on their task.
Finally, Mother’s Day arrived. To make the day special for Mummy, Daddy got up early and made breakfast for the entire family. After they had all finished, the girls took turns giving their special messages to Mummy.
Mala, the eldest daughter, went first.
“Dear Mummy, thank you so much for teaching me how to bathe myself. Thank you also for teaching me that I always have to be clean and take care of my little sisters. I love you very much!”
Then it was Anza’s turn.
“Dear Mummy, thank you so much for teaching me how to color properly in my art book. Now I am able to draw within the lines. Thank you also for teaching me how to make my bed in the morning. I love you very much.”
And finally, it was little Gemma’s turn, the youngest.
“Dear Mummy, I used to suck my finger very much. When visitors would come, they would look at me and say I had to stop. But I tried, and I wasn’t able to. Thank you, Mummy, for telling me it was going to be okay. Thank you also for showing me to use socks on my hands during the day. This helped me very much. Now I don’t suck my fingers anymore. I love you very much.”
As Mummy heard her little girls saying this, her smile shone brightly. She was glad to hear her daughters speaking of the lessons she had patiently imparted to them. With tears of joy welling in her eyes, she pulled all three girls into a tight embrace, her heart overflowing with love and gratitude.
Watching this beautiful moment, Daddy smiled too.
Turning to his daughters, he said gently, "You know, girls, Mummy may not always play hide-and-seek with you like I do. But the things she teaches you, like how to take care of yourselves, how to color, and how to be brave when things are difficult… those are very special things. They are things that are so important, and they are things that I am not able to teach you in the same way that Mummy does."
Together, they all said, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mummy!”
Happy Mother’s Day to you, amazing mother!
